I saw Michael Friedman at a Horological Society lecutre several years ago and wha he said really resonated with me, "While most objects and technologies that we engage with on a daily basis they’re all going to be upgraded in a matter of a couple of years or even less. But expertly crafted mechanical watches they’re technically designed and crafted to last forever.
Mechanical watches are among this tiny category of objects of permanence that stand in absolute defiance to the planned obsolescence that surrounds all of contemporary culture. Pretty much everything in our lives is subject to an immediate upgrade except for mechanical watches.
The special place that mechanical watches holds in the present day is directly connected to the fact that watches are in disciplinary by nature. They encompass many many different routes in various spheres of both the arts and the sciences.
